Te Whakakitenga o Waikato Incorporated ("we" or "us" or "Waikato-Tainui")
The Waikato-Tainui Taiao Grant is awarded to projects that align to the Vision and Strategy for Waikato Awa and the objectives set out in the Waikato-Tainui Environmental Plan (Tai Tumu, Tai Pari, Tai Ao).
The maximum amount that may be requested per application is $100,000. The total contestable fund is $1,000,000.
Priority Areas
- Kia Tupu – To Grow: Growth and building of knowledge, capacity and capability to practice kaitiakitanga
- Kia Hua – To Prosper: Assisting tribal members and marae in their environmental aspirations
- Kia Puaawai – To Sustain: Continuing roles as Kaitiaki in protecting current environments
Funding Exclusions
Expenses not covered include salaries and wages, long-term puutea to support kaimahi, and capital expenditure.

- Detailed budget for your project and/or initiative including any external that has been sought.
- Identification on file (Birth Certificate, Drivers Licence or Passport)
- Bank Confirmation (must contain bank logo, account name and number)
Terms and Conditions

Must be a registered Waikato-Tainui tribal member and permanently residing in Aotearoa

Charitable status where an applicant is a trust or organisation

Alignment to the Waikato-Tainui Environmental Plan Tai Tumu, Tai Pari, Tai Ao and priority areas

Experience and knowledge in implementing environmental projects and/or initiatives

Completed application form in full
Only one grant application is available per applicant in any financial year period.
Sole discretion to accept, withdraw or defer a grant application that does not meet criteria rests with us. Decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. Incomplete applications will be withdrawn after 60 days and a new application form needs to be completed.
Most grant application payments take up to 8 weeks for processing, approval and payment (if approved). Payment is due on the 21st of each month.
