Keep up to date with what we're doing together and get involved!
Waikato is a growing tribe of over 80,000, and just like our tuupuna before us, we are voyagers and pioneers. We present to you the ever-evolving Waikato-Tainui story.
Across five key pou, Hapori, Taiao, Kaupapa, Whai Rawa and Mahi Tonu, we group and measure our mahi. This is all aligned to Whakatupuranga 2050.
We support tribal members' success by providing grants, scholarships and support for personal development opportunities. Explore the range of grants, subsidies, scholarship and health assistance opportunities currently available to tribal members.
Waikato-Tainui hold numerous events throughout the calendar year. Many are celebrations which reaffirm our identity as Tainui waka and as protectors of the Kiingitanga movement.
The latest happenings within the Waikato-Tainui tribe – and there is a lot happening. Find our press releases and other media here too.
Our most valuable possessions we hold as an iwi are the teachings given by our ancestors, taonga tuku iho, handed down from one generation to the next.
We have an enduring entrepreneurial and innovative history. Discover businesses in the Waikato that are owned by our very own tribal members.

Today’s announcement by Biosecurity NZ that Waikato River is home to the invasive Freshwater Gold Clam is a huge disappointment and will likely draw a strong reaction from Marae along the length and breadth of our tupuna awa.
That is the reaction from Waikato-Tainui Chair Tukoroirangi Morgan this morning as the iwi contemplates how it responds to this latest incursion.
To say I am mortified is an understatement said Mr Morgan, “more needs to be done to protect our fragile ecosystem against all introduced pests that find themselves in our waterways.”...

Here we go again!!! Clowns.
If its not the wetlands, its the awa again.
Push MPI for eradication as much as you can. The thing going in your favour in this situation - dare I say it - are the dams and their national significance. But you can also argue significant impacts to maatauranga due to the potential displacement of culturally important species like kaeo, (and in Te Puuaha - tio and pipi), and the cultural practices related to them.
