Te Puea Memorial Marae was built to honour the late Princess Te Puea Heerangi, who along with King Korokii supported its construction in the mid-twentieth century. The Maaori Freehold and Lands Act allocated a Maaori Reservation for the purpose of a marae, where Te Puea Memorial is situated.
The marae is located on the southeastern side of Maangere Bridge near the shores of the Manukau Harbour. Te Puea Memorial Marae is the northernmost marae of the Waikato confederation. The marae links ancestrally to the Tainui waka.
The wharenui is Te Puea and the wharekai is Ngaa Tama Wahine. It is defined by the maunga Te Arapuru Kiekie and the moana Te Manuka o Hoturoa (Manukau Harbour).
