Te Oohaakii marae is located 6 km north of Huntly on the western banks of the awa Waikato. The principal hapuu that affiliate with this marae include Ngaati Kuiaarangi, Ngaati Mahuta, Ngaati Tai and Ngaati Whaawhaakia of the wider iwi collective of Waikato.
The wharenui is named Te Oohaakii a Te Puea, in honour of the recent ancestor Te Puea. The marae ancestrally links to the Tainui waka, the maunga Taupiri and the awa Waikato.
