Te Kuuiti Paa

1 Awakino Road, Te Kuiti 3910

Te Kuuiti Paa is located in central Te Kuuiti on SWH3. Te Tokanganui a-Noho wharenui (meeting house) was built in 1873 under the direction of the Maaori leader and prophet Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki, who lived in Te Rohe Pootae (The King Country) between 1872 and 1893. He gifted the house to Ngaati Maniapoto as a gesture of thanks for their hospitality not long before receiving a government pardon in 1883. The house has been relocated three times, the last time to make way for the North Island main trunk railway line.
