Raakaunui Marae is located, 30 kms from Kaawhia township on the inner edges of the Kaawhia harbour and 63 kms to the west of Te Awamutu. The primary hapuu for this marae are Ngaati Ngutu and Ngaati Paretekawa of the Waikato confederation, and Ngaati Kerapa, Ngaati Takiari and Ngaati Te Waha of Ngaati Maniapoto.
The wharetupuna is known as Moana Kahakore. The marae connects ancestrally to Tainui waka, Kaawhia moana, and both Pirongia and Hikurangi maunga.
