Mookai Kaainga marae is located just 5 km north of Kaawhia township, on the west coast of the North Island (Te Ika a Maaui). The primary hapuu for this marae Ngaati Pare and Ngaati Te Mihinga hapuu of Ngaati Hikairo. Mookai Kaainga is also connected to the Waikato confederation.
The whare tupuna is Ko Te Mookai. The marae connects ancestrally to the Tainui waka, the moana Kaawhia, the maunga Pirongia and the awa Waipaa.
