Mookai Kaainga Marae is located just 5 kms north of Kaawhia township, on the west coast of the North Island (Te Ika a Maaui). The primary hapuu for this marae Ngaati Pare and Ngaati Te Mihinga hapuu of Ngaati Hikairo. Mookai Kaainga is also connected to the Waikato confederation.
The wharetupuna is Ko Te Mookai. The marae connects ancestrally to Tainui waka, Kaawhia moana, and Pirongia maunga.
