Maketuu marae is located on the northern shores of the Kaawhia Harbour, in Kaawhia township. The hapuu is Ngaati Mahuta. The whare tupuna is named Auau ki te Rangi in honour of Hoturoa, and was opened in 1962. Auau ki te Rangi was the father of Hoturoa (the navigator of the Tainui waka), who is said to have been buried on the small puke behind the marae when the waka landed at Maketuu.
The marae connects ancestrally to the Tainui waka, the moana Kaawhia and the maunga Pirongia and Karioi.
