Hiiona marae is located in Puketotara, Ngutunui, about 20 km north-west of Ootorohanga. Hiiona’s principal hapuu is Ngaati Pourahui of the iwi Ngaati Maniapoto. It connects to the Tainui waka.
Hiiona consists of the wharenui Te Awananui and the wharekai Puna Aroha Puna Kai – and the name ‘Hiiona’ is an English transliteration of Zion, which means ‘the righteous heart’.
