Hiiona Marae is located in Puketootara, Ngutunui, about 20 kms north-west of Ootorohanga. Hiiona’s principal hapuu is Ngaati Pouraahui of Ngaati Maniapoto. It connects to Tainui waka.Hiiona consists of the wharenui Te Awananui and the wharekai Puna Aroha Puna Kai – the name ‘Hiiona’ is an English transliteration of Zion, which means ‘the righteous heart’.
