Doctoral Grant

The Waikato-Tainui Doctoral Grant is designed for post-graduate students residing in Aotearoa, pursuing NZQA Level 10 studies. Applicants can apply once per financial year for up to three years and are required to explain alignment of their research with the key priorities outlined in Whakatupuranga 2050, including Kiingitanga, Tribal Success, or Tribal Social and Economic Wellbeing.

The Waikato-Tainui Doctoral Grant is designed for post-graduate research degree students residing in Aotearoa, pursuing NZQA Level 10 studies.

Applicants must demonstrate how their research aligns to the priorities outlined in Whakatupuranga 2050, including Kiingitanga, Tribal Success, Tribal Social and Economic Wellbeing.

Supporting Documents

  • Bank Confirmation (must contain bank logo, account name and number)
  • Confirmation of enrolment
  • Certified invoice of your course fees
  • Previous year academic results transcript (if relevant)
  • Whakatupuranga 2050 alignment statement
  • Koha statement and evidence of completing this, when applying in consecutive years (if relevant)

Terms and Conditions

  1. Must be a registered Waikato-Tainui tribal member and permanently residing in Aotearoa

  2. Identification on file (Birth Certificate, Drivers Licence or Passport)

  3. The tertiary institution and course must be in New Zealand and NZQA accredited

  4. Completed application form in full

Only one grant application is available per applicant in any financial year period.

Sole discretion to accept, withdraw or defer a grant application that does not meet criteria rests with us. Decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. Incomplete applications will be withdrawn after 60 days and a new application form needs to be completed.

Most grant application payments take up to 8 weeks for processing, approval and payment (if approved). Payment is due on the 21st of each month.
