To understand the kaupapa of ORUA, we first have to understand the origin of the name which stems from the stories and narratives passed
down to us by our elders. The collective of Rua descend from Tangaroa, the god of the sea, and are referred to when one speaks of a Maori
expert or tohunga as Rua are seen as the holders of knowledge, thought, and learning. In addition, this also refers to the embodiment of
knowledge, thought, and learning through traditional Maori arts and crafts, including carving, the first marae, and therefore are the origins of
architecture. As such, ORUA means to be ‘of Rua’, highlighting the innate connection of our work to the origins of not only architecture, but
knowledge, learning and thought, and more importantly grounding us as a collective within Te Ao Maori.
