Puukaki marae is situated in Maangere off Massey Road down a long driveway and near the crater-edge named Te Puukaki Tapu o Poutukeka. The principal hapuu is Te Aakitai of the Waiohua iwi, which affiliates with the Waikato confederation, and trace descent from the Tainui waka.
Puukaki marae is ancestrally associated with the maunga Maungakiekie and Taupiri, and with the awa Waikato and the Manukau Harbour.
