Exciting new era in tribal leadership

It’s an exciting new era in tribal leadership as new members join the ranks alongside stalwarts across Te Whakakitenga (Tribal Parliament) and Te Arataura (Tribal Executive Board).

As we enter this new term, today at Hopuhopu the first tri-annual Te Whakakitenga hui took place. Ten executive board members were elected as your Te Arataura (tribal executive) for the next three years. Te Whakakitenga Chair and Deputy Chair for the tribal parliament (TWoW) as well as the Whenua and Appointments committee members were also elected. They are:

Next week the newly elected Te Arataura will meet for the first time where they will elect a Chairperson, as well as welcome in the newly appointed Kiingitanga Representative (we will publish full details of these announcements at the conclusion of Te Arataura first hui). Outgoing TAT Chairperson, Rukumoana Schaafhausen, who held the position of Kiingitanga Representative was given a warm and loving farewell at the conclusion of todays formalities, gifted with beautiful pounamu taaonga and a Waka Huia as acknowledgement of her service to the iwi over the last 25 years.

Parekawhia Mclean will continue on for a second term as Chairperson of Te Whakakitenga and will be joined by newly appointed Deputy Chair, Ikimoke Tamaki-Takarei. “I am humbled and honoured to be re-elected by an unanimous vote of confidence, 61 marae”. Says Parekawhia, “I am looking forward to working with the new executive board members (Te Arataura) and I’m confident that the combination of skillsets and vigor the new members bring, combined with the experience of those returning will make for a successful term ahead”.
