Maangai Maaori Appointed to Waikato District Council Welcomed

Wednesday, 6 May 2020

Waikato-Tainui welcomes the appointment of two Maangai Maaori to the Waikato District Council to take effect in the next month or so.

Maxine Moana-Tuwhangai has been appointed to the Strategy and Finance Committee and Policy and the Regulatory Committee, while Brendon Green has been appointed to the Infrastructure Committee, all of which are among the most influential committees in council.

Chair of Te Whakakitenga o Waikato, Parekawhia McLean welcomes the appointments noting both are current members of the Te Whakakitenga o Waikato which is our tribal parliament.

She says this provides the opportunity for a Maori voice at the decision-making table which is critical given the likely on-going effects of COVID-19 on our local economies.

“Maxine and Brendon are active members of their various communities and offer a wide range of serious skills to their appointed council committees.”

“This is a significant moment in the evolution of Waikato District Council and I want to acknowledge the leadership and vision of Mayor Allan Sanson who has been a vocal advocate of this appointments process.
