Waipapa Marae is located on the north side of Kaawhia moana. The marae links to the iwi Ngaati Hikairo. All hapuu of Ngaati Hikairo connect to Waipapa. The principal hapuu however are Ngaati Te Mihinga, Ngaati Raahui, Ngaati Pokaia, and Ngaati Puhiawe. The new wharekai is called Te Maru o Hikairo and was opened in 2019 replacing the old wharekai built in the 1950's. The whare tupuna is called Ngaa Tai Whakarongorua and the wharenui Taku Hiahia.
Ngaa Tai Whakarongorua is well over 100 years old and the oldest whare tupuna within Kaawhia Moana. The original names for this whare were Te Whaanau Pani and then Te Mihinga. Taku Hiahia wharenui can sleep up to 300 and is used for waananga, hui and tribal gatherings. The marae associates with Tainui waka, Pirongia maunga and Oopaarau awa.
