Maketuu Marae is located on the northern shores of Kaawhia Harbour, within Kaawhia township. The hapuu is Ngaati Mahuta. The wharetupuna is named Auau-ki-te Rangi and was opened in 1962. Auau ki te Rangi was the father of Hoturoa (the navigator of the Tainui waka), who is said to have been buried on the small puke behind the marae when the waka landed at Maketuu.
