Waipapa marae is located just to the north of Kaawhia township, on the west coast. Waipapa marae belongs to the Ngaati Hikairo hapuu of Ngaati Horotakere, Ngaati Puhiawe, Te Whaanau Pani and Ngaati Hineue. The whare tupuna is called Ngaa Tai Whakarongorua and the wharenui is named Takuhiahia.
Ngaa Tai Whakarongorua is over 100 years old. The original names for the whare were Te Whaanau Pani and then Te Mihinga. Takuhiahia wharenui can sleep up to 300 and is used for waananga, hui and tribal gatherings.
