Te Puea Memorial Marae was built to honour the late Te Puea Heerangi, who along with Kingi Korokii supported its construction in the mid-twentieth century. The Maaori Freehold and Lands Act allocated a Maaori Reservation for the purpose of a marae, where Te Puea Memorial is situated.

The marae is located on the southeastern side of Maangere Bridge near the shores of the Manukau Harbour. Te Puea Memorial Marae is the northernmost marae of the Waikato confederation. The main hapuu is Ngaati Mahuta. The marae links ancestrally to Tainui waka.

The wharenui is Te Puea and the wharekai is Ngaa Tama Waahine. It is defined by Te Arapuru Kiekie maunga and Te Maanukanuka o Hoturoa moana (Manukau Harbour).
