Mangatoatoa Marae is south of Kihikihi, near the banks of the Puuniu River and 9 kms from Te Awamutu. Its primary hapuu are Ngaati Parewaeono, Ngaati Ngutu and Ngaati Pare Te Kawa of Ngaati Maniapoto.
The wharenui is called Te Maru o Ihowa. The marae connects ancestrally to Tainui waka and Kakepuku maunga.
Maungatoatoa Paa may be up to 400 years old and is placed in an excellent tactical location for protecting the marae complex. It is thought to have been used as late as the Waikato Land Wars campaigns in 1864.
