In partnership with Hato Hone St John and the Waikato District Council, Waikato-Tainui are proud to be rolling out AED (Automated External Defibrillator) units and 3 Steps for Life training across all 68 Marae.

The 3 Steps for Life training is about equipping our whaanau with the knowledge and confidence to respond in an emergency.

As part of this kaupapa, both tribal members and marae executives can attend.

If a marae executive attends, they will receive a PowerBeat X3 defibrillator to strengthen their preparedness and response.

Our focus for this rollout will be to ensure educating whaanau on:

  • The importance of correct AED placement
  • Completing and understanding the AED maintenance checklist
  • How to register AEDs on the AED Locations app
  • Information about the GoodSAM app (optional for marae to opt-in)
  • The purpose and use of outdoor AED cabinets, including community access, maintenance, and the 111 call centre code process
  • Confirming with the AED lead how the free maintenance reminder service will be set up

Ongoing support includes annual refresher training, routine maintenance checks, and opportunities to complete Level 2 First Aid courses through Hato Hone St John with all associated costs covered by Waikato District Council.

Through this collective approach, the programme not only delivers vital life-saving tools and knowledge but also strengthens the resilience of our Marae while leveraging strong partnerships and joint management agreements.

Each participating Marae that completes the 3 Steps for Life training will receive:

  • Defibrillator Ready Kit
  • Outdoor AED Cabinet (Key pad lock)
  • St John PowerBeat X3 Defibrillator

Please note: AED units can only be uplifted by a marae executive member, or someone mandated by their marae to collect on their behalf.
