Waikato - Tainui Appeals Watercare Consent Decision

Waikato-Tainui have launched an appeal to challenge a part of the Watercare Consent decision. Te Arataura members sought advice in the weeks following the decision and have taken a considered approach in reaching its decision to appeal said Chair Linda Te Aho “We acknowledge the ruling offered some concessions but we remain concerned with the undermining effect on te mana o te awa and the mana whakahaere of Waikato-Tainui and our hapuu and marae along the river,” she said. “We will advise Watercare and the relevant local/regional government representatives of our decision as a matter of courtesy however our primary responsibility is to represent the interests of our awa and people.” “Whilst the Panel acknowledged this was a finely balanced decision it is absolutely clear to us is that our tupuna river should not be used to fix decades of failed infrastructure investment”. “Our team will now undertake the substantive work to build our case which we will not litigate further in the public domain,” said Linda Te Aho.
